In 2019, USD 257 voters overwhelming supported a $35 million bond issue to build a new elementary school, a new high school science building and extensive renovations to Iola Middle School. The commitment to public education helps keep communities vibrant, writes Joel Mathis. The move by Kansas legislators to divert more and more taxpayer dollars to private schools is especially detrimental to small communities that depend on their public schools to help attract new businesses and industries.
