October was a bittersweet month for Wings of Warriors, an organization that aids cancer patients with gift cards.
The group has assisted 61 cancer patients this year and handed out 21 cards to 16 people in September, including three new patients.
But the Oct. 18 meeting was the first without long-time member Adelina Holloway, who died Sept. 3.
For new business, officers were elected for 2024: President Carla Capper, Vice President Mary Ann Ritter, Treasurer Karen Culver and Secretary Mike Joy, who joined as a new member. Jackie Thompson and Eddie Johnson were named to the group’s advisory committee.
Wings of Warriors received an assist from Russell Stover Chocolates with candy for Saturday’s Farm-City Days parade. In addition, Russell Stover officials tapped Wings of Warriors as the beneficiary of Saturday morning’s 5K run to celebrate the company’s 100th anniversary. Meanwhile, Mitch Sigg of Sigg Motors allowed use of one of his trucks to pull the Wings of Warriors float for the parade
The final Wings of Warriors meeting of the year will be at 6 p.m. Nov. 8 at Rookies in Iola.
