Extension Agent for 4-H
The photography project teaches youth how to capture their friends, family and important events through photography. Learn about basic and advanced film cameras, and/or digital cameras, and how to plan, compose, light and exhibit their photos, as well as advancing into wide-angle and telephoto lenses, filters, light meters and computer enhancement.
There is 4-H curriculum that can be purchased for anyone interested in the photography project. Here is a breakdown of what youth can learn at different levels:
Level 1:
Learn more about a camera and how it works
Learn basic photo composition
Organize a photo story
Learn to use simple automatic or digital camera
Level 2:
Learn shutter speeds and f-stops
Use the Rule of Thirds
Learn to capture a point in time
Level 3:
Use filters and special film
Learn how to use a light meter
Create still-life photos
Explain the differences between normal, wide angle, telephoto and zoom lenses
In addition to the curriculum, youth are also offered the opportunity to attend project meetings held by volunteers and attend photography judging contests at various levels. Each year, youth are able to demonstrate their hard work locally at the county fair and depending on age and placing, the Kansas State Fair.
A photography workshop for all ages and experience levels will be at the Zion Lutheran Church, 1202 W. Main, Chanute, on May 17, 6:15 p.m. – 8:15 p.m. Cost is $8 (Neosho County 4-H Members are free.) Registration can be found online at http://tinyurl.com/yagc5wj5and must be submitted by May 1. This workshop is being sponsored by the Neosho County 4-H Development Fund.
The photography project is a great opportunity for youth to learn important life skills.
