FORT SCOTT — Marmaton Valley High School students learned about competitive math Oct. 18 at the Fort Scott Community College Math Relays.
Twelve students competed by taking 15-minute timed tests to compete against more than 250 students representing 18 schools from Kansas and Missouri.
Students were tested over set theory, geometry, algebra, equations and inequalities, simplifications, mental math, potpourri, and number theory.
“I was very proud of the kids’ efforts and especially for getting up on their day off to go compete,” math coach Kelci Botts said, noting there was no school that day due to a teachers in-service.
Only six of the 12 students had ever competed before in a math relay, she added.
“It can be very overwhelming for the first time,” Botts said. “I expect great things from this group and look forward to our spring competitions.”
