Fifty years ago, on April 17, 1966, Mel and Phyllis Nelson were married. Friends and family are invited to pass along well wishes and share stories April 16 at the Dr. John Silas Bass North Community Center, 505 N. Buckeye St., Iola.
The couple requests no gifts.
The Nelsons were married at the Moran United Methodist Church.
Mel is a U.S. Army veteran, and worked as a substitute mail carrier while owning and operating his own mechanic shop. He completed his career as a full-time postal carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Moran.
Phyllis was the Iola office supervisor for the Kansas Social and Rehabilitation Services for several years.
Upon retirement, both enjoy golfing and travel. Mel also enjoys tinkering at their home in rural Moran, while Phyllis volunteers at the Moran Manor.
They have two sons, Troy and Travis, and grandchildren, Krista Nelson and Tyler and Taylor Nelson.
