Iola Public Library has scheduled several adult programs for May.

The Intrepid Readers book discussion group will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday to cover  “The Library Book” by Susan Orlean. A seven-hour 1986 fire at the Los Angeles Central Library destroyed or damaged more than a million books. Orlean, a New Yorker staff writer, turns the largest library disaster in American history into a quirky, entertaining story packed with telling details and colorful characters.

The Iola Municipal Band, the oldest one continually performing in Kansas, and one of the USA’s oldest, has a colorful history stretching back to 1871. Attendees will celebrate the music and memories with director Jake Ard and veteran band musicians Andy Dunlap and Chuck Platt at 7 p.m. May 9.

The May Pinterest Party will be making a jewelry organizer. The program is at 6 p.m. May 20. Pre-registration and a fee of $3 are required by May 17.

A Red Cross blood drive will be held at the library from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 23. Those wishing to donate should call or stop by the library to schedule a time slot.
