Iola Public Library’s October programs for adults begin with “Metal Detecting to Unearth Treasure” at 6 p.m. Oct. 8. Bob Johnson and Robbie Baker will talk about their experiences and fun while metal detecting and finding treasures with tales of the past. Baker will bring with him some samples of items he found on a recent dig.

A program opportunity which just came up and so is not listed in the library’s fall program guide is a book signing. Author Carlene Meredith Cogliati grew up in Iola and will be in town for her 45-year high school reunion. She has written several books appealing to various age levels.  Her latest book, “Stretch & Sarah,” takes place in Kansas during a family reunion and is suitable for teens and adults. The library will host a book signing for her from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 10 in the main room of the library. She also will make several short presentations. At 4 o’clock, Cogliata will read a story for young children. At 5, she will make a short presentation for middle and high school age. At 6, she will make a short presentation for adults or high school age.

The October Pinterest Party will feature scarecrow décor at 6 p.m. Oct. 21. Pre-registration and a $3 fee are due by Oct. 18.

Do you enjoy collecting rocks? Like to learn more about crystals? Have you ever seen a fossil up close? At “Crystals, Minerals and Fossils” at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 24, Vicki Ritter will show and tell about the topic.

For Magic the Gathering fans, the library sponsors a “Halloween Magic Tournament” at 4 p.m. Oct. 26.

Participants can build their Magic the Gathering deck around Halloween characters: werewolves, vampires, ogres, and more and try to beat others. There is a grand prize winner and two runners-up. Registration is required by Oct. 18.

Jason Roe, who grew up in Iola, is the presenter for “Wide-Open Town: Kansas City in the Pendergast Era” at  7 p.m. Oct. 29. He will discuss the book of the same name, (which he co-edited with UMKC professors Diane Mutti Burke and John Herron), and the Kansas City Public Library’s website, The Pendergast Years: Kansas City in the Jazz Age and Great Depression. The project brought together more than a dozen scholars to examine the 1920s and ’30s, a pivotal moment in regional and American history. Machine boss Tom Pendergast reigned and Kansas City was “wide-open” with its famous jazz scene, widespread vice, and diverse political and cultural developments. Roe will also sell and sign copies of the book. Roe received his Ph.D. in U.S. History from KU and is employed as digital history specialist at the Kansas City Public Library.

Roe’s program had to be rescheduled, so those wishing to attend who might have seen the program listed in the library’s program guide should take note of the new date.

Also of note, the program “Out of the Shadow: Darol Rodrock,” scheduled for Wednesday, was canceled.
