A number of items were discussed Monday at the monthly Kappa Alpha Chapter of Phi Tau Omega Sorority business meeting.
President Roberta Elli read the National Presidents letter with an emphasis on chapters to help local Feed the Hungry by making donations to their area food pantries and backpack for kids programs.
Kappa Alpha member Susan Hoffmeier donated a quilt she made, and other members donated pies and cookies for a raffle and fundraiser Sunday for a local cancer patient. Proceeds went to help with travel expenses.
Four gas cards had been given to cancer patients to help with their travel expenses. Two more requests for gas cards were submitted.
Kappa Alpha members helped with the annual Reading Festival Saturday at Iola High School. An estimated 500 people attended.
Kappa Alpha will help the Iola Recreation Department again this year with the Santa Breakfast at the Iola Middle School Commons area Dec. 8. Kids can visit with Santa, while free pancakes and sausage or biscuits and gravy will be served to the first 400 in attendance. Families are asked to bring a canned good item per person to help support the Community Pantry.
The sorority also made a monetary donation to Barbara Chalker Andersons daughter and two granddaughters, who lost all of their household items, furniture and clothing due to black mold in a rental house in which they were living. Members also are going to gather various household items and donate them.
The next Kappa Alpha social will be Nov. 19; the group will attend a movie at Iolas Sterling Six Cinemas.
The next business meeting will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 6 at Community National Bank. Gwen Tefft and Collene Ellis will be hostesses.
