Jerry Lee Whitworth and Sharon Kay McGinty Whitworth, Iola, celebrated 50 years of marriage on Aug. 15, 2014.
The couple was married on Aug. 15, 1964, at First Christian Church in Neosho, Mo. The Rev. Thomas Plumbley officiated the ceremony. The bride’s maid of honor was her sister Marsha Coffman, Yates Center, and the groom’s best man was Lt. Col. W.J. Whitworth, El Dorado, Ark.
The couple celebrated their anniversary with a trip to Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C., with their children and grandchildren. The party included daughter, Tara Hartman and husband Brett and their four children, Caleb, Nathan, Seth, and Anna who reside in Mechanicsburg, Pa., and son, Charlie Whitworth and wife, Jill and their three children, Cooper, Tucker and Karlie, New Strawn.
The couple moved to Iola from Little Rock on Jan. 6, 1970 when Jerry purchased Trout’s clothing store on the square. He has owned and managed McGinty-Whitworth’s store for 45 years. Sharon taught school for USD 257 for 34 years and had previously taught in Springdale and Little Rock, Ark.
Jerry and Sharon enjoy hiking in the mountains in Colorado and New Mexico, reading, and attending the ball games and activities of their grandchildren.
They are thankful for the Iola community and the opportunities and friendships it has provided.
