Adam Spencer, Yates Center, Elsie Fleming, Iola, and Jesse Taylor, Iola, plan how to build a cube from as few balloons as possible during Math Fun Day for advanced and gifted middle school students sponsored by ANW Special Education Cooperative.

Thursday was Math Fun Day for advanced and gifted students under the umbrella of the ANW Special Education Cooperative.

Students from across the co-op’s three-county region participated in event, which included a math contest and a series of sessions taught by David Auckly, Kansas State University professor of mathematics. 

Winners of the math competition were: 8th grade, Chloe Pontious, Erie; 6th grade, Cole Mathes, Iola, and 7th grade, a tie between Blaine Smoot, Chanute, and Abigail Meiwes, Iola.

In addition to the geometry lesson, Prof. Auckly presented sessions on polyhedra using ropes, and the use of grids in mathematics. The event was at the Chanute Recreation Center.
