March 3 was district selection day for the Southeast Kansas FFA district.
Several Iola High School students earned top honors for their proficiency applications. Proficiency applications are based off of the students’ SAE (Supervised Agriculture Experience). Brody Nemecek won the district in his Diversified Livestock SAE as well as Swine Entrepreneurship.
Jillian Keller won district in Sheep Entrepreneurship, as did Levi Meiwes in Poultry Production. Casen Barker placed second in the district with his Turf Management SAE and Torre DePriest took home third in Veterinary Science. Nemecek, Keller and Barker will submit their applications on to the state level for judging.
Meiwes and Lorie Carpenter earned state degrees this year. To qualify for this honor a member must invest or earn at least $2,000 into their SAE or work a total of 600 hours.
Meiwes also took home the title of District Star Farmer.
ON TUESDAY, Iola FFA hosted three district contests. Ag Sales was held at the high school where the Iola team took home third place. Nemecek placed ninth individually and DePriest placed 10th.
Iola’s Poultry Team placed fifth. Meiwes placed fifth individually; Carpenter placed ninth.
Iola’s Dairy Cattle team took home the title of High Reasons in both A and B teams. A team won the competition with Nathan Louk placing first, Jenna Curry second, Josh Kaufman fifth, and Cali Riley sixth. B team took second with Jarrett Herrmann placing fourth, Jadyn Kaufman fifth, Dallyn McGraw seventh, Aysha Houk ninth, and Cody Wille 10th.
