Iola United Methodist Women are thinking of others during the Lenten season.

At their Feb. 28 meeting, members agreed to donate a certain amount for material blessings we have that aren’t available to many in the world. Those proceeds will be collected until UMW’s April meeting, and then donated.

The unit partook in church services Sunday to celebrate UMW’s legacy of 150 years.

At the Feb. 28 meeting, Gerry Uphoff shared from the prayer calendar a story about teaching people to be in mission. Donna Grigsby gave the response moment, explaining how St. Paul and St. Andrew United Methodist Church in New York City supported an illegal immigrant family within their church.

Regina Woodworth shared the prayer and self-denial program, with an emphasis on programs striving to address underlying causes that contribute to struggling children and young mothers. A collection was taken, and packets of seeds were distributed.

President Marty Meadows led in the group’s purpose to open the meeting. Alice Hood gave the prayer. Uphoff, Mary Joseph and Meadows served refreshments.

The next meeting will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Calvary United Methodist Church. Collene Ellis, Joann Maxwell and Gwen Tefft are hostesses.
