LAHARPE — The Iola Amateur Radio Club will host its annual field day activities Friday and Saturday at the home of club president Gale Jeffers, 408 S. Broadway St. in LaHarpe.
Field day is an annual exercise sponsored by member organizations to encourage emergency communications preparedness among amateur radio operators.
It is typically the largest single emergency preparedness exercise in the country, with more than 30,000 operators taking part.
Most exercises include rapid development exercises in a number of hypothetical scenarios, from operating under a tent in a remote area, or utilizing alternative power sources.
Field Day also includes an integrating contesting component, requiring operations to last 24 consecutive hours.
The LaHarpe site will include portable radio deployment using antennae and generators for power.
Field Day traditionally is held the fourth weekend of June.
On June 12, IARC members gathered for a planning session, with four members and one guest attending.
The next club meeting will be at 11:30 a.m. July 17 at Tina’s Cafe in Gas.
