CHANUTE — The Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks & Tourism is offering a hunter education class at Chanute’s Elks Lake Aug. 30 and 31.

The class is free, but students must attend all sessions, and must preregister online at www.safehunters.com. Class sizes are limited.

Hunter education certification allows hunters ages 12 to 15 to hunt by themselves. Otherwise, hunters younger than 16 must be under adult supervision. No hunter under the age of 12 may hunt alone, regardless of hunter education status — even if they are hunting on private land.

Classes run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Aug. 30 and from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 31.

The Saturday afternoon session is outdoors, so students should dress accordingly. Students should bring a sack lunch and drink, because Saturday’s lunch session will be short, organizers noted.

Elks lake is at 24410 Elk Rd. in rural Neosho County, or about 2 miles north of Chanute on Old 169.
