Members of the Happy Hearts FCE met Monday at the Community Building and heard a lesson on “Trash to Treasures.” The world is filling up with garbage, but recycling programs can help.

Aluminum cans clutter the roadside. Bottles float in lakes and streams and plastic is found just about everywhere. Recycling is key to helping the environment. Reducing the amount of waste you generate is a great step to take.

There are several things you can do:

Use tote bags when shopping. Say no to the plastic shopping bag. If you need to use a store bag, ask for paper.

Select packaging that does not have a lot of excess waste.

Use dinnerware than can be washed instead of paper plates or plasticware.

Use refillable water bottles instead of purchasing plastic bottles filled with water.

Only buy things that you will use in the immediate future.

Recycle everything that is recyclable.

Things that cannot be recycled include Pyrex glass, drinking glasses, foil liner bags, diapers, greasy or food-covered cardboard, light bulbs, paint, cleaners, oils, solvents, etc., batteries and electronics. Take all electronics to e-waste programs or donation centers.

ANN HOUK gave a lesson on “Words Count.” Have you ever attended a meeting where everyone was interrupting, no one was listening and people were not paying attention? Such meetings are not productive and not much fun to attend. Avoid meeting disasters by using parliamentary procedure.

Parliamentary procedure is the name given to a tradition of rules and customs the civilized world uses for gatherings where decisions are being made. The most commonly used is Robert’s Rules of Order.

Parliamentary procedure is an orderly method to conduct a business meeting. It helps to plan and transact business quickly and easily. It protects the rights of individual members. It strengthens and preserves harmony within a group. It aids in reaching decisions in a short time and without confusion.
