COLONY — Crest High School students Anna Hermreck and Lindsey Godderz teamed to win a silver medal at the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) National Leadership Conference June 30-July 4 in Anaheim, Calif.

The students competed in “Life Event Planning,” which focused on a number of activities Hermreck and Godderz spearheaded at Crest through “Freshman Friendsmas,” a Christmas party they hosted for their classmates.

The project required an extensive planning process, creating a portfolio for the event and giving a 10-minute verbal presentation to a panel of three judges.

The inspiration behind “Freshman Friendsmas” was to help their classmates grow closer following the death of a friend last year, explained adviser Caitlin Callaway.

Other activities included a Secret Santa gift exchange, games, pizza and watching a Christmas movie.

The events were so well received, Callaway said, the students hope to make Freshman Friendsmas an annual event at Crest.

Hermreck and Godderz competed in the national leadership conference after qualifying at both the district and state STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) competitions earlier this year.
