A two-day blood drive at Allen County Regional Hospital has turned into a Battle of the Badges.
Donors will be able to donate blood from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday.
For each unit collected, the donor will be able to vote for either the law enforcement or fire/ems team. The law enforcers are represented by the Iola Police and Allen County Sheriffs departments. The Iola Fire Department and Allen County EMS are on the other team.
The winning team will get bragging rights, and possibly a trophy.
Organizers hope to make the battle an annual competition.
In any event, the beneficiary is the American Red Cross, which is reporting a blood shortage for 2019.
Donated blood can help patients of all ages, including accident or burn victims, for heart surgery, organ transplant patients and those battling cancer.
