Learning local history pays off

An alliance of museums across Southeast Kansas honored Summer Salzwedel and Phyllis Nelson for visiting several museums in 2021. Salzwedel and her son visited 34 such museums; Nelson 15.

The Southeast Kansas Museum Alliance Passport Project announced that Iolan Summer Salzwedel was the grand prize winner of the SEK MA Passport Project.

Salzwedel, and son, Tayten, visited all 34 museums within the SEK Museum Alliance in 2021.

They received $300, plus a greater appreciation of southeast Kansas’s rich heritage.

“This kid is the real winner, with his love for history and museums,” Salzwedel said. 

Meanwhile, Phyllis Nelson, a docent at the Allen County Historical Society, received $150 for visiting 15 museums.

Thirty-one people sent in verification forms to confirm they had visited the designated number of museums to qualify for prizes. A drawing was held Jan. 21 at the Wilson County Historical Museum.
