The author of the current Iola Reads book selection, Michael Graves, will be in Iola on March 12. Graves will speak at 7 p.m. in the Creitz Recital Hall in the Bowlus Fine Arts Center. His book “To Leave a Shadow” is a mystery set in Depression-era Wichita. Graves will speak about how the book came to be, significance of the names and details in the book, and what it’s like to be a Kansas writer. He’ll sign copies of the book, and will have copies of the two sequels (one of them hot off the press) to sell and sign as well.
There are also several programs at Iola Public Library during March.
The March Pinterest Party attendees will be making a bunny digging in a pot. The class is at 6 p.m. March 16. Pre-registration and fee of $3 are required by March 13.
Family Game Night is at 6 p.m. March 20. An array of board or card games will be offered, with some suited for all ages. Refreshments will be provided.
“So You Want to Write a Book” will be discussed at 7 p.m. March 26. Those who have thought about writing a family history, memoir, novel or poetry often don’t know how to get started. Attendees can hear the voice of experience and get how-tos and resources from experts and published local authors. Speakers from Allen Community College are long-time journalist and writing tutor Bruce Symes and English instructor Susan McKinnis. Joining them is Iola Register journalist Bob Johnson. Local biographer Rebecca French and novelist Donna Hawk Regehr will tell how they found publishers. French is the author of “Opa: From Hitler Youth to American Farmer and Father”; Regehr’s book is “Desert Gold: The Legend of Chinook.”
