Ham radio operators from the Iola Amateur Radio Club in Southeast Kansas will host a radio exercise June 24-25 at Iola’s Riverside Park.
The event coincides with national field day, joined by operators from across North America.
The event runs from 1 p.m. Saturday, June 24, until 4 p.m. Sunday, June 25.
Ham radio operators set up are essentially temporary radio stations in public locations to demonstrate their skill and service to provide essential communication in emergencies.
The advantage is that ham radios can function without cell towers, telephone lines or Internet infrastructure.
Many operators have their own generators, solar panels or batteries to power up their equipment without assistance of an electric grid.
