Walter H. Wulf, president of Monarch Cement Co., announced this morning that the firm’s Humboldt plant, one of the largest industries in Allen County, will be virtually rebuilt during the next several years. Preliminary engineering work and surveys will begin next week and construction proper will follow later in the summer.

Another sure sign of mid-winter arrived today with an announcement by W. H. Root that the annual Allen County checker championship will be at stake here Saturday night. Root said the tournament will be the 33rd annual contest. He has played in most of them and won more than his share. The boards will be set up in city hall.

Rep. Spencer A. Gard of Iola has introduced and argued for a bill to give Iola school district voters the power to vote an additional levy up to 5 mills in order that Iola Junior College, a casualty of the war, might be reorganized and resumed.

A village of trailer houses, now occupied by 21 families, has come into being in the past week or two on the old Washington school grounds on South Walnut owned by A. A. Ensminger. It came into existence to meet the housing needs of workers who are engaged in building the Sinclair pipeline or will be employed on the paving of State Street. Work is to begin shortly on the rebuilding of U.S. 59 on its State Street route through Iola.
