Several works by Helen C. Scott of Iola will be featured in the lobby of the Bowlus Fine Arts Center until May

9. Mrs. Scott’s weavings are known to many Iolans, and she has been awarded numerous prizes for her creations in competitions throughout the Midwest.

The Iola City Commission voted yesterday to issue industrial revenue bonds not to exceed $900,000 to finance a significant addition to Arkhaven Nursing Home. The expansion would include increasing the bed count from 60 to 120 and building 12 apartments for independent living clients who could also pay to use other facilities the home provides while enjoying a level of independence.

Vandalism in Shepherd Park is costing the city at least $1,000 a month, parks superintendent Keith Locke told the city commission. He said that three times in the past month lavatories have been ripped off the walls in the restrooms in Shepherd Park and “at one time or another about everything that can be broken has been broken.” The lavatories cost over $100 to replace, he said.

The spring meeting of John Calvin Union Presbytery was held here Thursday. Mrs. Gladys Sutherland of Iola is chairperson of the general council. Iolans elected to committees of the Presbytery, which serves six eastern Kansas counties and the northwest quarter of Missouri, were Stanley Toland to the Synod’s permanent judicial commission and Mrs. Mickey Lynn to the Kansas Ecumenical Campus Ministry Commission.
