4-H’ers learn about feeding cattle

The monthly meeting of the Seekers-Not-Slackers 4-H club was called to order on Jan. 20, by Vice President Logan Walter. Flag salute leaders were Braden Gillespie and Owen Thompson. Roll call was “What is your 4-H New Year’s Resolution?” It was answered by 20 members and one leader. 

In Committee reports, it was announced that our March meeting will be an exchange meeting with the Barn Harvesters 4-H Club. Hailey Gillespie gave a brief update on 4-H Council. 

There was no old business. In new business it was discussed that members get new 4-H T-Shirts. It was voted that we will participate in a model meeting for District Club Days at West Franklin school on Feb. 29. Practice will be held after next month’s meeting as well as at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23. 

Fair ads will be due to the extension office March 9, and members were reminded that Blue and Gold orders are due March 2. Beef weigh-in will be from 1 to 4 p.m. March 29 at the Anderson County sale barn. Small animal weigh-in will be May 6. 

For the program, Gunner Ellington gave a talk on how much grass cow/calf pairs eat, and gave tips on how to improve your herd operation by the types of hay and grain you feed, and the effects that weather and overgrazing cause to your cattle. Tyler Gillespie gave an informative talk on the  Impossible Whopper, Hailey Gillespie gave her talk on humane slaughter and how meat gets to our dinner plate. Timber Vermillion gave a demonstration talk on how to make personalized travel cups, that she makes with glitter paint. 

Recreation leaders Gunner Ellington and Timber Vermillion lead an indoor game of tag. 

The meeting was adjourned by saying the 4-H pledge. The next meeting will be Feb. 17 at the Lone Elm Community Building.
