Gary and Janice Parker of rural LaHarpe are one of six Kansas farm couples chosen this year as master farmers and master homemakers by the Kansas Chamber of Commerce and the Extension Service at Kansas State University.

HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt National Bank was a century old a week ago today. A history of the bank is included in the anniversary announcement on page one of this issue.

Building a retention pond to prevent flooding along Coon Creek would be much more expensive than previously estimated and will not be pursued, the Iola City Commission decided Tuesday. It  was decided to remove bridges that span the creek along Benton and North Street and try other less expensive remedies, such as dredging and ways to speed up water flow.

Stanley Dreher announced Thursday night that he would seek the Republican nomination for a seat in the Kansas House of Representatives. Dreher, a farmer and rancher, said he is running to strengthen representation of agriculture in the Legislature. He has served on the state Farm Bureau board for 14 years and was named Kansas Farm Bureau Leader of the Year in 1976.
