George H. Mack, 77, longtime Iola banker, died April 13 at Allen County Hospital. He and his wife, Lola, came to Iola in 1941 to work for Allen County Bank. He rose in that organization to its presidency, the position he held at his retirement in 1965.

The Fifth District Republican convention will be Saturday at the National Guard Armory here. Robert Bennett, former governor of Kansas, and Jack Brier, secretary of state, will be featured speakers. Also scheduled to make remarks are State Sen. Robert Talkington, Rep. Rochelle Chronister of Neodesha, and Denise Apt, a member of the State Board of Education.

Phyllis Meredith, Iola artist, is one of 25 southeast Kansas artists who will be honored Friday at a reception at Cedar Crest, the governor’s mansion. The Association of Community Arts Councils of Kansas is conducting the reception for the artists, all of whom have paintings currently hanging in Cedar Crest.
