The Globe Building in Iola, circa 1950s

Louis Schlanger opened The Globe Clothing Store at 2 S. Washington in 1901, when Iola was a boom town with a population between 12,000 and 13,000 and both Gas City and LaHarpe were sizable communities due to the gas and zinc industries. There were five other men’s stores in business at the time. Schlanger died in 1974 at age 92. He was born March 13, 1882, in Nagy Kapos, Hungary, and came to Iola in 1901. The store closed in 1966.
