Ken McGuffin, dean of USD 257 administrators, told the school board he will retire June 30. McGuffin has spent 24 years as an elementary school principal in the district, the past 11 at Jefferson Elementary. He was McKinley principal for 13 years prior to that. In all, he has been a teacher or principal for 33 years, 32 of them in USD 257.

HUMBOLDT Steve Parsons has resigned as superintendent of USD 258 to become superintendent of the Chanute schools next fall. Parsons is completing his third year at the USD 258 helm.

MORAN Students in Marmaton Valley High Schools Future Homemakers of America chapter let it be known what they thought of motorists who didnt wear their seat belts. They stopped a handful of cars along Cedar Street in Moran this morning during an impromptu safety check. The motorists who were buckled up received Smarties, a brand of candy. Those who werent received another brand of candy: Dum Dums.

Fourteen students from Lincoln Elementary School went to Topeka on Thursday. The students, one from each classroom, toured the Capitol, met with Rep. Stanley Dreher and Sen. Tim Emert and posed for a picture with Gov. Bill Graves. The trip came about because all students at Lincoln School signed a pledge not to bring a weapon to school or to use a weapon to settle disagreements with another student or anyone else.

Ivan Strickler will be among the first five people to be inducted into the Kansas Cooperative Council Hall of Fame in ceremonies in Hutchinson on March 8.

Susie Greve, a sixth-grade social studies teacher at Iola Middle School, has been selected to travel to Ecuador this summer as part of a team of Kansas educators. While there, she and the others will learn about the countrys culture, history and other information that will be used to develop social studies curriculums for other teachers across the country.
