The old Missouri Pacific passenger depot, which dates from about the turn of the century, is being torn down by Vernie Diehl, local razing contractor. T. D. Smith, a MoPac official at Durand, said the depot was built after Missouri Pacific purchased the line from Fort Scott, Denver and Western before 1900. Diehl, also dated the building to that time, pointing to the sandstone foundation and the quality of the bricks used as clues. Smith said passenger service to the Iola depot was discontinued in about 1957. Local freight still is carried to Iola by MoPac.
