The Northrup Building, one of the largest structures on the Iola square, was destroyed early this morning by fire which threatened a major part of the business district. The blaze originated in the Shannon and Shannon Hardware store. The loss is estimated at over $350,000. A stiff wind from the southwest scattered burning embers over the roofs of buildings located several blocks away. At one time the flames nearly touched the Sleeper Furniture store on the north side of Jackson Street. Only heroic efforts by Iola firemen and the eight-inch covering of snow and ice on nearby structures prevented the conflagration from spreading over a wide area. The owners of stores and nearby buildings patrolled their roofs during the morning hours and extinguished burning embers which showered down from the skies. The room occupied by the Security Building and Loan Association was on the northeast corner of the building. The vault seemed intact and Dudley Henderson, secretary, said the loss could not be determined until it is opened and its contents examined. Among the other businesses which had offices in the building were the Cox Grain Co., the American Red Cross, the Eastern Kansas Gas Co., the Hoyt Oil Company, W. S. Fees, the J. B. Kirk Gas and Smelting Co., Lamer and Stiles, Attorneys, Jerome Wille, contractor, the Iola Athletic Association, the state engineers office and the office of the state Vocational Rehabilitation Service.
