Massoth had been the chaplain of St. Gregorys College when elected on the second ballot of the 47 monks who had gathered for the election. He entered the Order of St. Benedict after service in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was ordained a priest in 1951. Since that time he served in many capacities at the college and the monastery.
