John Schmaus, Iola, and Marion M. Summer of Independence tie for first place of those graduating from KU Medical School. It’s the first time in the school’s history that two have tied for top honors.

Roy Sleeper celebrated 50 years as an Iola furniture dealer and mortician yesterday.

“We’re getting the prettiest wheat that I’ve seen during the 21 years I’ve been in the grain business,” D. A. McDonald, owner of the Iola Milling Co., said this morning. One grower delivered wheat to the mill yesterday that tested 64 pounds to the bushel, 11 percent moisture and averaging 36 bushels to the acre.

According to the locally counted census, the population of Iola is 6,972 and Allen County has a total count of 17,721, down from last year’s 17,884. Humboldt went from 2,146 to 2,214. The count was made by county assessors.

Fifty-two members of Iola’s National Guard unit, the headquarters battery of the 195th F. A. Group, boarded the Sante Fe Streamliner yesterday for Camp Ripley, Minn., for a two-week training period. Last week a convoy of trucks and Jeeps left Riverside Park and the men in charge were on hand this morning when the remainder of the battery reached Camp Ripley. The Iola group is commanded by 1st Lt. Dewey Peck. He is assisted by 2nd Lt. David Peck. Iola officers who are on the group staff include Captain Clarence Robinson, Captain J. D. Goldsmith, Major Gerald Pees.
