Jenise Bain was named valedictorian and Paula Lucas salutatorian of the 1985 Iola High School graduating class.

Sally Barnaby was named valedictorian of the Humboldt High School graduating class and Chris Kuestersteffen was named salutatorian.

Gates Rubber has laid off 28 employees because of substantial inventory buildups. John Noonan, plant manager, said many of the company’s major markets — in farming, mining and oil field interests — were still suffering from a weak economy, leading to the inventory buildups locally. He said, “The 28 people laid off would probably not be called back to work for at least six months. We’re at the mercy of the market.”

Misty Mann won second place in the 100-meter dash at the Kansas state track meet on Saturday. The Fillies brought home 12 medals from the meet in Wichita.

Daniel Dale Creitz was graduated May 18 from Washburn University of Topeka School of Law. In August he will join the law firm of Hines-Alquist in Erie.

For the past two years Nellie Rose and her daughter, Cindy (Rose) Clark, have commuted to Pittsburg to attend classes at Pittsburg State University. This spring the two did their practice teaching in Iola schools. They were graduated from PSU on Saturday. Clark has been hired by USD 257 to teach at Jefferson Elementary School next school year.
