Southern Coffey County High School is forming a trap shooting team for this season. Currently, 14 students have signed up and have completed the SAFE class certification and have also completed their field day that allows them to compete.
The Kansas High School Clay Target League is not associated with Kansas State High School Activities Association so the school follows all the guidelines that are set by the clay target league. The spring season will be a nine-week season and the high school will be assigned a league to compete against other schools in Kansas. Starting April 3, the students will have their first assigned week for practice. There is a state championship held in June and every member of the team will have an opportunity to compete.
Clay target shooting is an activity that is becoming more and more popular in Kansas. SCC superintendent Russ Mildward surveyed students at the high school as to their interest and a large number said they would participate. After getting Board of Education approval, the school moved forward on forming a team. Mildward had been in discussion with Kelly Carland from Erie to get the ins and outs of the program.
SCC has gained sponsorship and donations from corporations and individuals to help with the finances of registration, ammunition, targets, and safe equipment needed for the students. Their goal is to raise enough money that the students will be able to have an opportunity to compete with no out-of-pocket expenses. Students must use a 12- or 20-gauge shotgun.
A March 23 fundraiser in Le Roy will support the trap shooting team. Meals will be served at the Le Roy community building starting at 7 a.m. and lasting until 6:30 p.m. Breakfast will consist of sausage, pancakes, eggs, biscuits and gravy while the lunch/dinner will be made up of pulled pork, baked beans, potato salad, and coleslaw. If you are unable to attend the event but would like to make a donation you can mail that to SCC Trap Shooting at 1010 N. Main, Le Roy, KS, 66857. If you have any questions about the program you can contact Mildward at the district office at 620-964-2212.
When Iolan Donna Houser approached City Council members Monday about her concerns regarding overnight parking in downtown Iola, she was not speaking on behalf of apartment or business owners, as was erroneously reported in the Register.
I was acting on behalf of the people who come to our town, and who stay at the lovely apartments downtown, and get a ticket, Houser said in an email. I would hate to have people who are here for a day or a week or a month to say, Well, the one thing I can tell you is Iola isnt very receptive to people visiting.
The owners had nothing to do with her comments, Houser added.
Council members have agreed to investigate further the citys downtown parking rules, including whether exceptions could be made for tenants in town on a short-term basis.
Dear editor,
My name is Craig Marshall. I am the superintendent of Burlington USD 244. I wanted to write this letter in support of the Iola USD 257 bond issue coming up on April 2.
I have become very knowledgeable of USD 257 over the past two years while serving as chairperson of the KESA (Kansas Education Systems Accreditation) team. We meet yearly to discuss the district, areas of improvement, challenges in education, celebrations of the great things that are happening in Iola, and anything else related to education. I have found that the staff in Iola is very committed to an excellent educational experience for all students so they can be successful citizens in the future. The district is focusing on a number of different areas like child nutrition, wellness, social/emotional health, family engagement, curriculum alignment, internships, and other areas too numerous to mention. Education is so challenging in 2019, and the district is working hard to meet the needs of your community.
The upcoming bond issue for your district is of vital importance. The direction USD 257 has taken makes sense addressing the elementary complex for better facilities so the younger kids have a terrific place to attend school and get off to a great start with their educational experience. The cost effectiveness also makes sense as you will replace older buildings with a much newer and more modern facility that will be energy efficient and save the district with utilities and repairs.
Improved school facilities will be a great recruiting tool for teachers and economic development in your community. The competition for teachers nationwide is at an all-time high. Providing your teachers a great place to teach and students a great place to learn is so important for your community. Possible economic development in Iola may depend on the facilities you have to show potential businesses a reason to invest in the community.
In closing, I have been very impressed with the thought and collaboration that has taken place by USD 257 in planning for this bond issue. The need is there for Your Kids, Your Schools, and Your Future.
Craig Marshall,
USD 244 Burlington
Superintendent

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) Former Kansas football coach David Beaty said Tuesday he was suing the schools athletic department in federal court, alleging breach of contract and seeking $3 million he contends he is owed after he was fired in November. The Jayhawks said they are withholding the money pending an NCAA investigation into possible rules violations by the former coach.
Beaty was let go with three games left last season but finished out the year to end his tenure with a 6-42 record in four seasons. The woeful program did post a conference victory over TCU and end a 46-game road losing streak under Beaty, whose contract was extended two years through 2021 in late 2016.
Beatys attorney, Michael Lyons of Dallas, said the contract guaranteed payment if Beaty was terminated without cause and that the coach would be paid $3 million owed to him. Instead, the attorney said, Kansas officials discussed what it would take to avoid paying Beaty and contends he was told in December there were allegations involving a member of the football staff and that Kansas athletics would not make the guaranteed payments pending an investigation.
Beaty has cooperated with the investigation and has been unequivocal that he unaware of any violations of any NCAA rules while the head football coach at KU, according to an excerpt of the lawsuit.
Jim Marchiony, a Kansas associate athletic director, said the school learned of possible NCAA violations allegedly committed by Beaty after the season during exit interviews with football coaches and staff.
KU contacted the NCAA and the Big 12 Conference and began an investigation into the matter. Beaty refused to cooperate with the KU review and, ultimately, the NCAA took the lead in the still-ongoing investigation, Marchiony said.
He also said the money owed to Beaty is being held in escrow in a show of good faith pending the outcome of the NCAA probe.
While disappointed in the court filing, the university is committed to seeking the truth and upholding our high standards of ethical conduct, he said.
Beaty arrived at Kansas as a nondescript wide receivers coach from Texas A&M who had stints as the offensive coordinator of the Jayhawks and Rice but had never been a college head coach. The program he inherited was in shambles following the failed tenure of Turner Gill and the abject failure of Charlie Weis, but with an abundance of energy and positivity he began to slowly improve things.
Beatys success on the recruiting path didnt translate into enough wins. His team won two games in Year 2, one last season and went 3-9 last year. He watched as athletic director Sheahon Zenger the man who had hired him was fired largely because of the football programs struggles.
New athletic director Jeff Long hired Les Miles, who led LSU to the 2007 national title. Miles signed a five-year contract that will pay him $2,775,000 annually with retention bonuses of $775,000 due in November 2020 and $500,000 in November 2022. The deal includes several other incentives in a sign Long plans to invest heavily in the program.
Kansas has often been labeled a basketball school, and rightly so given the Jayhawks streak of 14 consecutive Big 12 titles. But while gridiron success has been fleeting, Mark Mangino proved as recently as the 2007 season that it is possible. Kansas went 12-1 and won the Orange Bowl that year.
The current roster is better stocked than when Beaty came onboard, but a massive talent gap still exists for Miles to address. Fan apathy is at historically low levels and the school is little more than a year into a five-year, $350 million fundraising effort begun by Zenger that was supposed to earmark more than $300 million for much-needed renovations to Memorial Stadium.
As part of her Iola United Club book report Monday, Kit McGuffin reviewed The Strange Case of Dr. Couney How a Mysterious European Showman Saved Thousands of American Babies, by Dawn Raffel.
McGuffin recounted a spell-binding tale, in which Couney revolutionized neonatal care more than 100 years ago, saving more than 7,000 infants in the process.
Couney used incubators and careful nursing to keep previously doomed infants alive, while displaying these babies alongside sword swallowers, bearded ladies and burlesque shows at Coney Island, Atlantic City and venues across the nation.
But, Dr. Couney also had something else to hide, McGuffin continued, noting the author drew upon historical documents, original reporting and interviews with surviving patients in order to unravel the mysterious doctor.
Mondays meeting was hosted by Judy Arbeiter in her home. Seventeen members answered roll call.
The next meeting is March 25. Donna Lower-Nord will host the meeting. Helen Ambler will present the program.

CLEVELAND (AP) Odell Beckham Jr. is about to run a deep route out of New Jersey straight to Cleveland.
The superstar wide receiver is bound for the Browns to be a target for quarterback Baker Mayfield as the centerpiece of a blockbuster trade, two people familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Tuesday night.
The Browns are sending first- and third-round picks this year along with safety Jabrill Peppers to the Giants for Beckham, one of the NFLs top players, said the people who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because league rules prohibit teams from announcing trades until 4 p.m. today.
The deal is conditional on both players passing physicals.
With the Browns, Beckham will be reunited with receiver Jarvis Landry, a close friend and teammate at LSU. Hell also give Mayfield an elite weapon, and his arrival could vault the Browns, who went 7-8-1 last season after not winning a game in 2017, into legitimate championship contenders.
Rumors of a possible deal have swirled for weeks, with several Browns players teasing a major move by Cleveland general manager John Dorsey on social media. Dorsey pulled it off, bringing a major talent to accelerate his attempt to rebuild the Browns into consistent winners. Cleveland hasnt been to the playoffs since 2002.
The trade is the second major one involving a star wide receiver in four days as the Pittsburgh Steelers recently sent Antonio Brown to the Oakland Raiders.
While Beckham is immensely talented, there is some baggage as he can be temperamental and difficult. He was suspended for one game for his on-field battles with Carolina cornerback Josh Norman. He also comes off two injury-plagued years. Before last season, he became the leagues highest-paid receiver with a five-year, $90 million contract extension.
He played five seasons in New York, making the Pro Bowl in his first three. He was the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2014.
Its the second trade completed in the past week by the Giants and Browns. Cleveland sent guard Kevin Zeitler to New York for edge rusher Olivier Vernon, who will now play on the opposite side of Pro Bowler Myles Garrett.
The Giants had been reluctant to trade Beckham, with GM Dave Gettleman insisting over the past few months that the club did not sign him to the historic deal in late August to trade him. But the Browns were persistent and Dorsey, who has remolded the Browns since coming to Cleveland at the end of 2017, came up with a package the Giants simply couldnt resist.
John Dorsey is officially a genius… tweeted Browns defensive back Damarious Randall.
And now new Browns coach Freddie Kitchens has another playmaker for Mayfield, the No. 1 overall pick last year who had a dazzling debut season in which he set the NFL record for touchdown passes by a rookie.
Kitchens will have to try to keep Beckham in check, something Giants coach Pat Shurmur struggled to do. Early last season, with the Giants off to another bad start, Beckham seemed upset with his role in Shurmurs new offense and said quarterback Eli Manning was not capable of throwing deep passes.
Mayfield and Beckham are already tight; they spent part of last summer working out in California with Landry, who has been campaigning since he arrived in Cleveland for his former college teammate to join him.
When news of the agreement broke, Mayfield posted a photo on Twitter of him shaking hands with Beckham. Movement was the caption.
In the aftermath of Beckhams shocking exit from New York, Browns wide receiver Breshad Perriman asked Cleveland to void his agreement on a one-year, $4 million contract. The Browns obliged and the sides mutually decided to cancel the deal struck earlier in the day.
Perriman, who revived his career with Cleveland last season, then agreed to sign a one-year package with Tampa Bay, a person with knowledge of the deal told AP.
Dorsey has had a busy offseason, signing troubled running back Kareem Hunt to a one-year contract, trading for Vernon and agreeing to a three-year, $39 million deal with defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson.
Landing Beckham is his signature move, a signal that he believes the Browns are on the verge of a Super Bowl run.
Many were expecting the Giants to take a step forward after going 5-11 in Shurmurs first season. They were looking to improve their offensive line, get some pass rushers and shore up the defense, which struggled in coordinator James Bettchers switch to a 3-4 front.
In the past week, the next step has turned into a rebuild.
Vernon was dealt, and the team did not put a franchise tag on safety Landon Collins. Instead, the catalyst of the defense and leading tackler each of the last four seasons is about to sign with NFC East rival Washington.
With the trade of Beckham, the offense has lost its top playmaker, although one could argue the Giants started shifting that role to halfback Saquon Barkley last season. Barkley beat out Mayfield for Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Complicating the situation: The Giants havent figured out their quarterback situation. Manning is 38 and the team has only made the playoffs once since winning the Super Bowl in February 2012.
But the Giants have three of the top 37 draft picks in April, and 12 overall. They have their eye on taking a franchise quarterback, perhaps Oklahoma Heisman Trophy Kyler Murray or Ohio States Dwayne Haskins.
Peppers, who is from New Jersey, will help fill the void left by Collins departure. A first-round pick in 2017, he struggled as a rookie but bounced back and played well last season.
