HUMBOLDT — Humboldt Middle School’s boys had a rough start to their 2023 season Monday evening.
Visiting Galesburg took control early and cruised to a 46-28 victory.
“Hats off to Galesburg,” Humboldt head coach Jeremy Weilert said. “They were better than us in just about every aspect of tonight’s game. I am confident we will work hard to get better.”
There were some bright spots for the Cubs.
Kolton Hansen scored nine points, while Ty Shaughnessy had seven points, seven rebounds and five steals. Blayden McGuire scored six points, Bryer Grisier three, Carter Collins two and Connor Newman one.
In B team play, Galesburg prevailed 24-18. “We like to win them all, but I am not disappointed with our play,” Weilert said. “All of our mistakes are fixable.”
Zane Sanches scored six points to go with three steals, while Mason Miller had four points and four rebounds. Tucker Wrestler scored four, Breckin Guenther and Bentley Kolb had two apiece.
At the other end of the spectrum, Humboldt’s C team was dominant from start to finish, rolling to a 40-2 victory. The Cubs narrowly missed a shutout, leading 30-0 after three quarters.
Guenter scored 12 points with five rebounds and nine steals to lead the way. Grisier and Envy Oberbeck each scored eight points. Wrestler had five points, Collins four and Nathan Siebert three.
