A WEEKEND TO REMEMBER: Iola High School honors 2017 grads

The trumpets of the Iola High School band sounded as 67 seniors graduated in a ceremony Saturday at Iola High School.
Senior class speaker Sydney Wade addressed students on memories made throughout a lifetime. The IHS singers performed a rendition of “Over the Rainbow.”
Twenty-four special awards were distributed. Many of the students received multiple awards.
Gage Cleaver was awarded the McFadden Scholarship, the Edward B. Zahn FFA Scholarship and named as a Kansas Scholars Curriculum completer. Sydney Wade was awarded the LaHarpe High School Alumni Association Scholarship, the Jim and Lily Knight Scholarship, the Pittsburg State Scholarship and was named as a Kansas Scholars Curriculum completer.
This year’s graduating class had four valedictorians; Sydney Wade, Benjamen Cooper, Alexis Heslop and Riley Murry. Chase Regehr was named salutatorian.
Foreign exchange students Francisco Barria-Foschino and Sofi Generi earned honorary diplomas.
Ten students received scholarships to Allen Community College; Benjamen Cooper, Sierra Cunningham, Morgan DelaCruz, Ryan Eyster, Alexis Heslop, Megan Klubek, Dacoda Settlemyer, Caleb Spencer, Taylor Stout and Aaron Terhune.
